Meat is material

by Genevieve Paiement

"It's pretty much 'Meat 2,'" says Toronto artist Shelley Adler of Meat, a travelling exhibit featuring 20 artists from across Canada which first showed in TO last year. "There's photography, painting, video, installation, sculpture and it all plays with the theme of meat in such a wide way--it's totally across the board." For instance, the diptych painting which Adler collaborated on with Eugene Knapik, "Dans l'abattoir" juxtaposes a butcher and some bloody flowers. "The theme of meat has to do with sculptor Scott Childs' idea of the 'meat' of art, a material-based concept, of the materials that make up art. It's not political." At Galerie 418 (372 Ste-Catherine W., #418), Oct. 14-Nov. 18. Vernissage Saturday, Oct. 14, 12-6 p.m. :
