Fulfilling their mission of bringing us a fine selection of avant-garde and cutting-edge film and video, this year the New Film & Media Festival zeros in on English experimental photographer, film and videomaker David Larcher by giving him his own mini retrospective. The David Larcher, Passeur d'images/Nomadism and Magnetic Data retrospective includes five videos, one film and one live-video performance (a remixing of his Ich Tank with fellow video artist and editor Patrick Zanoli at the Media Lounge next Thursday, Oct. 19, 9 p.m.).
Larcher's main obsessions are plays on words, imagery and ideas, incorporating colours, sound and music in a free-flowing, poetic way. Take EETC, for instance, a video where scenes of mother and child in nature are juxtaposed with calculators, fading in and out, as blurry colour-washes seep in, photo-montages creep and the Orb-like music feels at times dreamily ambient, at times jarringly cacophonous. Or Videovoid where 3D animation gets as philosophical as it does trippy and interplanetary. Visit www.fcmm.com or call 847-2206 for details. :
