Degrassi Jr. shy
by SCOTT C
You can call me what you will, Montreal--idiot, simpleton, fool--but I have two faithful qualities that have never let me down. I've got a good eye, two if you want to get technical, and the memory of a circus elephant.
There I was at weekend hotspot Dusty's for breakfast last Sunday when I was given an opportunity to use both. While my friend Jackie took too long in the bathroom after we ate, I opted to wait outside. It was then that I noticed a particularly hot girl fumbling under her table on the terrasse, trying to put on her rollerblades. Upon further investigation, I convinced myself that I had met this girl before and maybe even talked at length. She then stood up to reveal a towering frame that still would have dwarfed me without the rollerblades, and I knew who she was. It was my good buddy Lucy from Degrassi Junior High, hanging out with some guy I'd never, ever seen on the show. I tried to convince my friend Jackie that we should go over and say hello, maybe ask her if she'd spoken to Wheels lately, but Jackie just got mad and dragged me in the other direction.
Saturday, Aug. 26, is the night you might want to head down to Club Soda if you want to catch the very first installment of On Da Goodfoot. This non-profit happening is the only 100 per cent hip hop event that you're gonna see at Cream this year. The night will feature B-boy crews from across Canada in a series of battle showcases. Participants include Boogie Brats and Bag of Tricks from Toronto, Vancouver's Battle Utensils and Montreal's own Tactical Crew, Flow Rock and Red Mask. Also present will be the all-important DJs and MCs such as P-Love, 1200 Hobos member DJ Fingaz, MC Blu Rum 13 and many more. For more info call Fern or Karl at 284-1144, or visit their Web site at www.ondagoodfoot.com.
As the countdown to school begins, you're most likely going to see a young Alex Robbins running around like a chicken with its head cut off. This charming lad is the promoter/mastermind behind a gazillion club nights happening in the course of a week and it's no secret that A.R. has a special relationship with the McGill crowd. On Sept. 6, Robbins' Wednesday night Cookin' at Tokyo presents Rootdown Montreal, with longtime U.K. jazz-dance fixture and the granddaddy of the butter track, Russ Dewberry. If you like to dance to afro-beat, Latin disco and rare groove, and fiend for some soul, the man from Brighton town should be right up your alley. Stay chooned yeah!
Lastly, Friday, Aug. 25, Brass Knuckles celebrate the release of De La Soul's new album Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, at Blizzarts. Beats, rhymes, giveaways and that ol' funky shit. :
