South Shore shoe store shakedown
by KRISTA
There's a new trend starting in DJ culture, that of the DJ as retail marketing tool. If you tuned into CKOI 96.9 FM last week, you may have heard the live broadcast from the Yellow Shoes superstore in Brossard where local superstars like Patrick Dream, Nav and Twist were DJing. Yes, you heard me right. The Bombay/Dune crew was on hand to inaugurate the new South Shore one-stop shoe shop, playing an assortment of "tunes to try on shoes by." To my dismay, the boys tell me the stint was just a one-shot deal and they won't be setting up any Yellow residencies.
So how 'bout that information superhighway? And talk about building it right in your backyard--Montreal is now home to three electronic-music-oriented Web sites. First there's our new online radio station, Sweet-ting (www.sweet-ting.com), where you can hear one- to three-hour sets from just about every DJ in the city (and that includes the ones you don't know). Obviously not all the sets are done live, since people have to sleep sometime, but Sweet-ting is currently streaming 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Essentiallyelectronic.com is a (very good-looking) site devoted to promoting independent, Montreal-based electronic artists. The site features house and techno, drum & bass, ambient, downtempo and more, from local labels like Dune, Finite and Districk of Montreal, as well as a few unsigned artists, all posted in MP3 format for you to give a listen to. Oh, and it talks to you too.
The Deepvibes collective are launching the updated and revamped version of their site, located at www.deepvibes.org. On their site you can find DJ charts, DJ mixes, music reviews, music news from here and around the world and columns. They even have a link to the club Shelter in NYC. The re-launch party takes place at Jai bar on Monday, Aug. 21, starting at 9 p.m., and in keeping with Montreal launch-party fashion, there will be plenty of free sushi. Deepvibes DJ Sinister, DJ 76 and Yannick B will provide the ambiance.
Girls! Girls! Girls! This Thursday, Aug. 17, at Jai bar's XX on Decks night, DJ Deana and tech-funker MightyKat take the helm. Next Thursday, Aug. 24, the globetrotting Maues, back from yet another European tour, plays with French native Crystal. Remember, women drink gratis till midnight.
Christian Pronovost twice in one week! Check out Inbeat Records' main man as he plays lord of the ring this Friday, Aug. 18, at Stereo, and then again next Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Thau Weva's Cookin' night at Tokyo. It's gonna be afrolatintechjazzfunksational.
