Slim summer pickings
The summer art season in Montreal is virtually non-existent; most private or artist-run gallery spaces close down from July onward, only to reopen in September. There are, however, galleries who brave the summer season, such as Galerie Lamoureux-Ritzenhoff. Newly arrived on the art scene with the goal of promoting up-and-coming Montreal artists, it houses an eclectic, if small, collection of local talent. Laid out in a salon style, the latest additions to the collection are three painters: Nguyen Tai, Gisèle L'Épicier, and Christian Malithais. Malithais' landscapes are vaguely reminiscent of the Group of Seven's Lawren Harris, L'Épicier's repertoire is made up of loosely painted nudes, and Nguyen's landscapes seem to be a fusion of Oriental landscape scrolls and the Vienna Secessionists. At 1428 Sherbrooke W., until Aug. 31. :
