Yes! Mos Def!

by SCOTT C

Well, it looks like somebody up there likes Montreal. The hip hop bookings for this year's Cream festival have finally turned a corner that will definitely grab some attention. With Cream transforming every year into something that may one day be a contemporary rival to the Jazz Fest, it's nice to see them tightening up the talent all around. At last word, Slum Village, Detroit's other hip hop claim to fame, cancelled a confirmed booking at Cream to play a date with some guy named D'Angelo in the States. That means no Motor City foreplay heading 2U4U. On the other hand, Dante Bizet himself (otherwise known as the mighty Mos Def) will definitely be there. He'll be joined by space freak and all around sexologist Kool Keith and the old-school cuts of Jazzy Jeff. Not bad. There's also a chance that the Chi-town styles of Common might be called in to fill the SV void. All this goes down Sept. 1 at Olympic Stadium, so hold tight.

Tired of diggin' in the same old spots for all the hot shit? Do you fiend records like a bad habit that you'd rather not talk about? Are you too lazy to trek around looking for the perfect beat? Well, you should probably check out Rotation's record sale on Sunday, Aug. 13. These guys are bringing in some of the city's most dedicated record whores to sell off selected titles from their vast collections. You can peruse the records of Tony Desypris, Luc Raymond, Chris Farley, Eddie "Don Dada" Lewis, Martin McLeish, Kurtis C, jojoflores and more. To participate or for more info call 848-9562.

University ho! Yes, it's almost time again, and Reggie's Lounge down at Concordia is looking for a Thursday night DJ. You can't be a chump just learning your way around the turntables either, because Hermes (the head dude in charge) is looking for somebody with skills. Can you mix hip hop, house, latin, grooves, funk and disco? Can you drive standard? If so, drop off your demo tape on Aug. 24 between 2 -4 p.m. at Reggie's, 1455 de Maisonneuve W. Check for Hermes. Oddly enough, you may know who Hermes is. He's the bald guy with a salamander tattooed on his head who also directed a video for d & b king Jordan Dare. The flick for the song "Forced" will be screened Aug. 24 at the Imperial Theatre as part of Student Fest, and you can call the Imperial at 848-0300 for more info.

Lastly, make sure to hit Bounce at Tokyo on Tuesday, Aug. 15, as they're hosting a special guest from Norway for the evening. Polar K (Moving Shadow, Certificate 18, Subtitles, Thermal USA) is in the house for the night for five bills and no guest list or passes. Sorry kids, but he's worth it. Also check out a benefit for StreetEaters magazine at Blizzarts on Aug. 20 featuring Shadowboxers, Scott "Bucketboy" Russell, DJ Subside, Matt Bain, Kashi Castro and Dave Levine. Also five bones. :
