Cool, cruel summer
by KRISTA
Boat parties, beach parties and barbecues may be thwarted due to non-seasonal weather, but there are still plenty of soirées to attend inside, out of the way of rain and cold breezes. Starting tonight, July 20, jojoflores, BassHedz and Inobe Productions are finally re-launching their Thursday night Therapy session. The new and improved Therapy will take place weekly in the blue room at Tokyo. In the interest of finding as many excuses as possible to party, coinciding with the re-opening of Therapy is M.I.C.E. Fest, "an annual nomadic event celebrating the birthdays of some of Montreal's most innovative scenesters and promoters" (that's quite a mouthful, boys). M.I.C.E. stands for Marcel, Inobe, Claudy and Etienne. Guest DJs from Japan B'Ugo Dah'Ling and Misayo will also be on hand to get the party started.
Juno Award-winning Montreal house producer Miguel Graca is set to launch his first full-length CD on Bombay Records, titled Shiningstars. Catch Miguel making cameo appearances at local nightclubs around town (look for the stretch Mercedes with the palm tree out the top), starting tonight, July 20, where he will be playing alongside Alain Vinet at Liquid's Ladies and House. On Friday Miguel will grace the stage of MusiquePlus's Bouge de là from 9-10 p.m. and then head over to join Bombay's Brown Princes Nav and Patrick Dream for the monthly Bombay night at Stereo. Next Friday, July 28, Miguel joins Vinet once again for a night of Afro-Latin rhythms at Jingxi's Atmosphere.
Strange but true: longtime Sona bar resident Joubin has left. The new plan for the bar on Saturday nights is to have one semi-permanent resident and rotating guests every week. Local tech-house trooper Pfreud takes over the spot starting July 22. Joining longtime Sona resident Laflèche in the main room this Saturday is the unparalleled Doc Martin, Californian DJ/producer extraordinaire.
Phase three: the latest record store to embark on a frenzy of remodelling is DNA/Science/Moog Audio. However, fret not. The crew aren't moving laterally in either direction. Instead, they've decided to think up and are taking over the second floor of their current space at 28 des Pins E. Renovations are currently underway (so excuse the dust, dirt and foreign noise) with plans to officially inaugurate the new, improved store in early August. Also, on the D-L, I heard it said that DNA frontman Tiga will be starting up a weekly Cobra night at a club on the Plateau in early August as well.
Last but sure as hell not least, my compatriot columnist Scott "Greatest Canadian Hero" C and his Brass Knuckles crew welcome Jurassic 5 DJ Cut Chemist this Friday, July 21, to their night at Blizzarts. Show up early because the Chemist must depart shortly after midnight.
