Who's got work for K?

by SCOTT C

First and foremost, I have to officially apologize to the good people down at V-Low lowrider bikes on Rachel. In the article I wrote for the Hot Summer Guide a few weeks ago, I only mentioned the first names of the other two partners in the shiny new business. Along with Joey (whose last name I already mentioned), Karine Paradis and Mark Carlevaris make up the V-Low team. Karine told me that when I printed her name as "K" in the article, she got a phone call from a guy in jail who thought the initial referred to him. He phoned to say thanks for the props, and that he'd be available for work upon getting out. Sorry, buddy.

If you haven't already seen the Illest Hebrew flossing up and down the Main, or posting hard on any given corner of Ste-Catherine, you will soon. The Illest, also known as young MC Bless, is busy promoting his new club night Classic Saturdays with his partner Frank B.L.V.D. at Bar Istori on Ste-Catherine. The flyer boasts this as Montreal's biggest hip hop night in the relatively new spot, along with 24 pool tables, cheap booze and "a free bottle of champagne with every 100th client." Although no names are mentioned, top Mtl and NYC DJs spinning hip hop and R&B is what you can expect. Stay tuned.

Tonight, Thursday, July 13 at Angels, the boys at Levels welcome some special guests from Toronto. T.O.'s Vinyl Syndicate presents DJ Slip, MC L-Natural and DJ Lush, all in town to play the first in a series of monthly guests touching down at Angels. DJ Slip is the guy behind the monster hit "Man of Steel" (y'know, that track with the Superman thing) and will be doing an in-store performance along with his label-mates at Noize, Thursday afternoon at about 4 p.m. Levels at Angels is hosted by residents Spinal and Sase One. Massive!

With DJ Andy Williams out of town for the next month, the Brass Knuckles have employed the skills of DJ WIG for an evening of crazy funk breaks and insane drums on Friday, July 14. An extra special guest is in the works for the week of the 21st, but when it happens, I'll let you know.

There's a new jazz bar opening on the corner of St-Denis and Duluth that's kind of a combo between Jello and Biddle's. It's called Jazz'iz and officially opens this Thursday with Jazz Fest favourite Susie Arioli and her swing trio. It's at 4075-B St-Denis.

Finally, hats off to Vic Schiffman and all the cats behind the DJ 2000 Series that went down at Club Soda over the last week and a half. I didn't hear any complaints (except for the one about Paul Barman--ooo! and Blackalicious too!) and a great time was had by all. Don't let the momentum stop, lads! Keep the pedal to the metal! Can't stop now, you're on a roll!
