Processing paint

The latest exhibition of Marcel Barbeau's paintings and collages, Dérives et variations, at the Maison de la culture Cote-des-Neiges, aims to show us something of the process of painting.

Barbeau is a hard-edged minimalist; his paintings consist of arrangements of flat, multi-coloured shapes and the paint surface is deliberately flat. His colours are largely primary and pastels. Meanwhile, he makes collages out of coloured paper and magazines and uses them as studies for his paintings.

So, in an effort to show both the beginning and the end, each large-scale painting is accompanied by its corresponding collage. Think of it as a behind-the-scenes look at the painting process. At 5290 Cote-des-Neiges, until August 19. : --Sholem Krishtalka
