Oka and Sexgarage remembered
For 23 years, local photographer Linda Dawn Hammond has been using her pictures to mix the political with the physical, the sexual with the sacrosanct, and the personal with the otherworldly. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Oka crisis and the Sexgarage party (in which cops busted up a gay party and beat the attendants, which led to a "love-in" in front of Station 25), and Hammond caught them both on film. Her double exhibit Behind the Barricades and Sexgarage commemorates both struggles with images that tell the stories from the inside.
"The two events are more linked than people would think," Hammond says. "There was a rumour going around that the reason the cops busted Sexgarage was because they were frustrated about not 'getting' the natives, and they thought gays were an easier target on which to vent their frustration."
