African fun in the sun
Kids are never too young to start shakin' a tail feather or bustin' a move, even if the move is simply to hop up and down to the beat of a rudimentary rhythm. Take Allakomi, a group from Burkina Faso, featuring Seydou Zon and his seven children--watch them shimmy and shuffle Friday, July 7 at 8 p.m. Also part of Vues d'Afrique's free festivities, this Saturday, July 8, there will be a music and dance show for the little tykes at 1 p.m. and a Rhythm Workshop at 3 p.m. where all manners of African percussion will be tried and tested.
Later on, for the whole family, Kalindi Ka, a group from Guadeloupe, take to the stage at 8 p.m. to do their thing, which incorporates chanting, a slew of female singers, traditional dancing and plenty of drumming. The action takes place in Parc Morgan at the Marché Maisonneuve (4375 Ontario E.), before moving over to Parc Lafontaine's Théatre de verdure for next weekend's shows.
