A Serious matter
by SCOTT C
I met DJ Serious (aka David Yan) back in '91, when we both worked as flunkies for Toronto's biggest ballet/opera house, the O'Keefe Centre. Back then, the spike-haired, 24-hole Doc Marten-wearing Serious may have been listening to hip hop, but looked like he'd be right at home with Sid, Nancy and the rest of the punks. I wish I had a picture. Today, Serious has emerged as one of Toronto's best-known underground hip hop DJ/producers. He has roots that reach back to the now-legendary Lola's Lounge (where we played together '92-'93), right up to the wildly successful DJ Serious Revue in the year 2000. Serious and partner-in-crime Mr. Attic of Da Grassroots will be guesting at the Brass Knuckles weekly Friday-night throwdown at Blizzarts on June 23, dropping the finest in hip hop, soul, funk and rare groove.
The stark raving naked dudes at Nude Recordings are launching their label with a party for their debut artist Jaffa on Thursday, June 22, at 6 p.m. There's gonna be free stuff, booze and a live set from the Jaffa band. Double A and Twist will be holding it down musically, if not completely naked themselves.
Oyé!, Montreal's monthly happening that caters to everything Latino, will be presenting a tribute to the Mambo King, Tito Puente, this Thursday, June 22, at Metropolis. Guests include Joe Armando as well as Milton Esteban, the Oyé! Dancers and master of ceremonies Gonzalo Nunez from La Rumba du Samedi on CISM FM, as well as DJs Mike, Irwin and Oliver. Tickets are $15. For info call 861-5851.
Saturday, June 24 is the night that Yellowman comes to the Medley, and perhaps this one can go off without a hitch. I hope to see nothing but good vibes lick up the place on Saturday night. The International Reggae Dancehall Ambassador is joined on stage that night by Danny Denton, for a night of real pale-faced control, seen? Tickets are $17.25 in advance and $21.25 if they're still available at the door. Info at 790-1245.
If you haven't checked Afripalooza yet, happening the first Saturday of every month, July 1 is the night for you. Comics include '99 NYC Slam Poetry Champ Kirk Nugent, Russian in the 'hood A.G. White, and the crazy-loco Arnold Acevedo. $15 gets you into Kola Note (5240 Parc Ave.).
Flash! Off The Hook (CKUT), Living Proof and the Beachcombers present "2 to da Cabbage," an Internet radio show hosted by Pat Wreck and Revolution every morning from 8-11 a.m. at www.sweet-ting.com. Underground hip hop, '80s pop and whatever's clever. Don't sleep. :
