I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that Montreal is sadly being passed up on the killer bill of the summer, Motoerhead and Nashville Pussy. The closest they're coming is to Toronto on June 24. Maybe this is the excuse you'll need to make that summer getaway, so stock up on some trucker crank (diet pills) and take that trip down the 401.

If you do plan on staying in town this year, the good news is a plethora of hardcore/metal/rock shows happening within stumbling distance of your couch. One important last-minute announcement is that AC/DC will be "back in black" on August 15. We salute them.

Montreal is still one of the biggest gate grosses for the Warped tour, so we will get a return visit on Friday, July 21, at Parc Jean-Drapeau. Whether you're a pre-pube and plan on "punking out " for the summer or just an older chickenhawk also planning on (ahem) "punking out," this is the place to be this summer. You can bug out to the sounds of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, NOFX, Green Day, Bif Naked (?!) and tons more. Must-see bands are Avail, Snapcase and Hot Water Music. Tickets are a measly $25 in advance and $40 at the door, and for God's sake bring some sun block.

For those nocturnal urchins who avoid the sun at all costs, this summer's chock-full of metal events for the chalky children of Satan. The Underground Deathfest is going to be at Foufounes on July 14 with Internal Bleeding, Deeds of Flesh, Mortal Decay and more. Also on the bill is the must-see Cephalic Carnage. The grunts of Satan starts at 5 p.m.

Part one of the Montreal Metalfest 5 is headlined by old-schoolers Destruction with five other bands and is tentatively scheduled on July 27 at a location TBA (check upcoming listings). Part two is at the Medley on August 2, with King Diamond, In Flames, the unlikely inclusion of Earth Crisis and five more.

If you're more in the mood for some classic arena rock, you can follow the mustachioed mullet brigade down to the Molson Centre on Thursday, June 22, to wave a final goodbye to the kings of arena rock, Kiss. Fans of opener and outspoken NRA member Ted Nugent are reminded that no crossbows will be admitted into the building.

Punk-o-rama will be making a stop at Rainbow-Ites, out in NDG, on July 27 with Dropkick Murphys, Bouncing Souls, the Distillers and the kings of punk the Dwarves. Don't stand too close to the stage during the Dwarves' 10-minute set or you might be sporting a shiner for the rest of the summer. Don't say I didn't warn you. Also scheduled for Rainbow-Ites are AFI and Choke on July 7.

At the Jailhouse, the newly-built terrasse will be rockin' to the sounds of Demolition on June 30 before they go to Japan, Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro on July 9, Bob Log III on August 26 and the Canadian debut of the Euroboys. Boasting ex-members of Glucifer and Turbonegro, the Euroboys promises to be one of the hottest shows this summer.

If smashing the state is more your idea of summertime fun, you can check out Against All Authority, Dillinger Four and Jersey who will be sweating it out at L'X on July 13. Crowd favourite Rev. Horton Heat will be hosting a Psychobilly Freakout at Club Soda on July 25. Better get your tickets soon as the Rev. is a sure sell-out. The "feel-good hit" of the summer would have to be when Queens of the Stone Age smoke into town on July 27 at Café Campus. Hint: bring lots and lots of doobage and fill up that wine skin.

If you're more in the mood for just kicking back on a terrasse, don't worry. We got ya covered. You can check out the Jailhouse terrasse overlooking scenic Mount Royal any day of the week, with various DJs. Also, Rock and Roll àgo-go soirées with yours truly (shameless plug) spinning glam, metal, stoner, garage etc., are every Monday night downstairs at Foufounes, and finally, Montreal's best-kept secret is still at Café Chaos on Sundays and Tuesdays. DJ X Cafeine serves up everything from the Stooges to Billy Idol and the terrasse is a godsend on hot summer nights. :
