The Main drag

by KRISTA

Yea, though I walk through the valley of darkness that is Boulevard St-Laurent this weekend...

Right about now Iím kicking myself in the ass for thinking it would be ÃfunÒ and ÃcoolÒ to live on the Main anywhere near des Pins and Prince-Arthur. As of yesterday morning, the St-Laurent street fair got under way, and that means that for the next four days the Main will be transformed into one big long flea market. As well, just outside my window (or at least it sounds that way) the Guru tent is in full effect with local DJs playing all day and all night in front of Angels. Tokyo also has a sound system set up in front of its establishment, and, a little further up the block, La‚ka has a booth going.

Finally, Inbeat Records has moved! After 13 years the one-stop shop for DJs has relocated to a bigger, better space at 3814 St-Laurent, just above des Pins. Thatís right, no more sweating it out on Friday afternoon upstairs in a stuffy room. Owner Christian Pronovost has spared no expense in transforming the new, hip and spacious ground level storefront into a record-junkieís heaven. There are more listening booths, a better sound system, more vinyl (who thought it was possible?), a new CD section¾and the same great staff. Check it out.

On to the club stuff. Sonaís got a killer lineup of events coming up over the next few weeks, and a new resident to boot. Canadian superstar Max Graham, whoís being touted as the Ãprogressive house national pioneer,Ò will be joining the regular Friday night crew once a month.

You know schoolís out when Sona starts throwing all-night parties on a weeknight. This Thursday, June 8, Sasha, the progressive-trance/house DJ from London with the rock star attitude comes to Sona for what will surely be a night of uplifting, hands-in-the-air tunes. $25 at the door.

This Friday, June 9, the U.K.ís Trevor Rockcliffe of In-Tec records will pound it out in Sonaís main room with Tiga et al. $20 at the door. And this Saturday, June 10, Moonshine recording artist and ÃWest Coast legendÒ DJ Dan returns to Sona where he and Laflèche will battle it out with their 100 remixes of Danís ÃNeedle DamageÒ track (just kidding). $25 at the door.

This Friday, June 9, Japanese tech-house DJ/Producer Satoshi Tomeii makes his Montreal debut and joins XL behind the decks at Stereo. $20 at the door. Saturday, June 10, at Stereo itís Alain Vinet all night, flanked by the rhythmic mastery of local percussion ensemble Quicksound. Also $20 at the door.

Finally, the fourth instalment of the very, very underground Cobra events takes place this Saturday, June 10, at Quartier Latin. ÃCobra Strikes Again, Again!Ò features the dastardly duo of siblings Tiga and Thomas (both of DNA Records) playing a mish-mash of downtempo, electro and í80s smash hits. It starts at 10 p.m. and itís free, so come on down to 318 Ontario E.
