Angel >> George Harris: >> The community activist from Winnipeg won the legal right last week to take Revenue Canada to court for allowing the Bronfman family (of Seagram's fame) to move a $2-billion trust fund to the U.S. tax-free in 1991. The family would have ended up being dinged for about $700-million in taxes, which were waived by Revenue Canada in a decision the Federal Court of Appeal said smacked of "grave maladministration." Despite government arguments to the contrary, the court ruled that, as a Canadian taxpayer, Harris has a right to intervene in the case.

Insect >> Smog: >> Last week, Canada's auditor general released a report which stated that about 5,000 Canadians a year died as a result of air pollution. Over 1,300 of them were in Montreal, according to Health Canada--a local toll of about four smog deaths per day. The health effects of smog are felt almost all the time, and not just when there are special smog alerts. The above death figures were calculated based on data from 1980-1991. Since then, according to newspaper reports, the government's smog reduction programs have been sadly negelected. So much for Clean Air Day (June 7).
