Aliens at Jello!

by SCOTT C

Those of you who used to get out to Voltaire just about every week a few years back might be happy to know that a reincarnation of sorts has occurred. No, the little club that could has not re-opened, or relocated, or anything like that, but the people responsible for one of the greatest weekly vibes ever have reunited. Sunday nights at Jello Bar will now be hosted by local R&B troopers the Aliens, lead by Montreal's number-one full-time ladykiller and all-around showman Alan Prater. Add to that the deck skills of the recently missing-in-action DJ Storm, and you have a tried and true combination. Those of you who know Storm, the former "mullet king," know that he is not only a spectacle on the tables, but also behind the drum kit. He'll be sitting in here and there with the band when his services aren't needed on wax. Expect some invited guests and the occasional open mic, just like they used to do.

After missing the MTLUniversal launch party a couple of weeks ago, I decided the next best thing for me to do was actually check out the site. The very impressive layout of this entire project deserves a hand, and I can see that it will probably attract some very deserving attention as it takes off. The MTLUniversal manifesto:

1. To shed light on the local Montreal talent.

2. To expose and understand the roots of our everyday culture.

3. To analyze and interpret to the best of our knowledge the never-ending messages that surround us on a day-to-day basis.

4. To bring know-how to the culture in which we were raised in exchange for credibility.

5. To raise the standards of the creative community and get the recognition we deserve.

6. To bring a brighter more creative content to the greater public.

7. To sharpen the corporate pencil that draws the consumer world.

Maybe this sounds kind of lofty to you, but if you have any sort of talents, musical, artistic or what-have-you, these people could help you out. It's pretty simple. www.mtluniversal.com--go there.

Looks to me like this Great Adventure outside extravaganza could be just what we need here. Any excuse to bring the big man KRS-One into town can't be all bad. I'm sort of interested to see what the Jungle Brothers' live show has become, too. All those hi-NRG Euro-festivals they've been headlining should make them right at home in front of an Mtl crowd.

As if Blizzarts needed another night to get the masses movin'. Check out the new Thursday line-up at the Grill: T'cha, Alex Robbins and "ace in the hole" DJ Bliss spin Brazilian, electronica and breaks, mixing it up every week.

Lastly, break out the fresh gear for the St-Laurent street sale next week. This see-and-be-seen street closer is the best place to pick up everything from records and underwear to boys and girls. : <
