Groovy gardening

French artist Christine Maigne's "Black cultures" garden is featured in the photo installation "Leçon de jardinage." Maigne lined an empty lot in downtown Montreal with real plants as well as salt and pieces of rubber, nylon and coal to selectively stain the snow during the winter of 1999. Themes of trampling, piercing, blooming and spreading are examined in this high contrast parody of nature. : --Lorraine Carpenter
