After a careful scientific survey of Scooby-Doo fans, Warner Video learned of their four fave episodes and have placed them on this video compilation, Scooby-Doo's Greatest Mysteries.
Episodes include "Hassle in the Castle!" and "Jeepers, it's the Creeper!" and, mercifully, don't include any of those characters intended to bolster Scooby's post-mid-life ratings (i.e. Scrappy-Doo, Scooby-Dumb, Scooby-Dee or Scooby-Da). These episodes are clear precursors to The X-Files, with the gang roving the world debunking various mysteries. But apart from the scares, there's also Scooby's stinging wit, highlighted especially well during each episode's denouement. So often Scoob would manage to slurp up everyone else's food at meal time, without them noticing! The nuance! The double entendre! That crazy mutt!
Though the mysteries are fun to try and figure out, I'm still puzzled by Scooby's behind-the-scenes conundrums. Why does the gang continue to split up in mid-mystery when it so often seems to lead to disaster? And where on earth did they stick that live studio audience (the one that laughs throughout) considering this is a cartoon? And with Scooby's episodes' considerable intellectual punch, why did these shows air on ABC's Saturday morning lineup and not on PBS on Sunday nights? :
