When American Movie toured the fest circuit last year, it was heralded by many as the ultimate indie movie. But the film, which documents the misadventures of one hapless horror filmmaker as he struggles to make his short film, didn't fare so well in cinemas. It seems that though festgoers enjoyed its exposure of the rather ugly underside of the film world, most average moviegoers just want all those comfy illusions to remain intact. Too bad, for this is a smart and hilarious film, and Mark Borchardt, our auteur hero, is an American classic. The film hits video stands this month, and for those who missed it when it played here at the Cinema du Parc, I urge you to catch it on the small screen.
We Canuck film critics often take heat for overrating the home team. Our views are tainted, the argument goes, by a misguided cheerleading mission. But on this film, I stand by my opinion: Goin' Down the Road has been rereleased on video and this 1970 film is a true classic, a heartwrenchingly realistic take on two Maritimers who try to make it in Toronto. An exemplary example of top-notch filmmaking, with stellar performances by Doug McGrath, Paul Bradley and Jayne Eastwood. :
