Cramped snapshots

The photography show Poser un geste, on now at Centre Pierre-Péladeau, has a great deal working against it. Because of the politicized nature of the show's theme, namely the human body and AIDS, some of the photographs veer into the trite. There are technical troubles as well: the exhibition space is poorly lit. The show is hung salon-style along one wall only, so that about 30 photographs are cramped tightly together, some closer to the floor, some closer to the ceiling. The viewer, therefore, doesn't have the luxury of being able to look at them as individual pieces.

Despite all that, there are works like Dominique Thibodeau's sensuous photo-assemblage "Opera," John Londono's "Diptyque," and Lucia D'Alete's "Disponibilité," that manage to hold their own amid the overcrowded wall. These excellent stand-out photographs make an otherwise poorly organized show an entirely worthwhile experience. At 300 de Maisonneuve W., until May 31. :
