So close yet so Farrah

by KRISTA

What's going on? Here I was donning the pink fishnets, leather skirt and goomies, in celebration of the '80s revival, when I noticed the mad "Seventies Week" marathon taking place on NBC (leading up to what will surely be a poorly-edited The Seventies movie, airing this Sunday night). Hoping that this was just an isolated case of uninspired programming, I started channel surfing only to land on a Musimax Musicographie about the '70s. So I turned off the TV and turned on the radio (an even poorer choice) to find that whatever station I'm tuned into is playing some disco medley. Now, I can dig disco, but what with the veritable deluge of '70s rehash in music, TV and film we've had to swim around in over the past few years, I'm about ready to give up and "embrace the millennium"--except that my hair has just gotten long enough to flip out like Farrah circa Charlie's Angels and I'm really liking it. What's a girl to do?

Oh well. There are a number of non-disco-oriented things happening in clubland. Here are your options for the next 14 days.

Tuesday nights at Jai bar have been taken over by local prog-promoters LSM Productions, who are calling the night Tekhouse Tuesdays. DJs of the night are Misho and Sari, with guests. For info and guest list call 932-7456.

Jojoflores(R) and Therapy have left Thursday nights at Jai bar and the slot has been taken over by Sona's Saturday night bar resident DJ Joubin. However, you can still check out Jojoflores(R) at China every Saturday where he and Basshedz have revived Swank.

This Friday, April 28, Sweden's Conform and Code Red label recording artists Adam Beyer and Gaetek storm the main room at Sona with an all-out assault of drum-heavy techno. $20 at the door. This Saturday, April 29 at Sona, three's a charm. Baltimore's DJ Feelgood takes on the early morning slot in the main room, while London's king of the new-wave dub sound Mad Professor does it live in the lounge and Toronto's New Deal play live in the bar. $25 at the door.

As is the case with the last weekend of every month at Stereo, this Friday, April 28, DJ XL makes his solo flight. $17 at the door. Saturday, April 29, the magnificent David Morales returns to his favourite home away from home (behind the decks). Joining Morales is an as yet undisclosed "very, very special guest," rumoured to be of the diva/vocalist variety. $30 at the door.

My favourite new lieu intime, Liquid, is starting a new house night this Friday, April 28, called Pleasure. Resident DJs will be Nic B and Alek. $5 at the door.

I'm sad to report that dearly-beloved local drum & bass DJ/rock star Jordan Dare has packed up and moved back to the States (without even so much as a goodbye to most). His absence will surely be felt. :
