Personal politics
In spoken word, the combination of the political with the personal is always highly charged, and there are two shows spotlighting the connection between the two this weekend.
Since Paroles Rebelles is a benefit for next month's Anarchist Book and Freedom Fair, it's not surprising that the organizers chose the theme of "rebellion." Featuring Norman Nawrocki, the Groupe de poe#201;#233;sie moderne, Anne-Marie Ge#201;#233;linas, Landriault and les Abdigradationnistes. Hosted by Debbie Young, also Catherine Kidd and Fortner Anderson among others. April 29, 9 p.m. At Quai des Brumes, 4481 rue St-Denis, $5.
Victoria Stanton's solo show, Split: One Year Later addresses change on a more personal level. Bothered by the fact that we're living in a supposedly feminist society among women afraid to call themselves feminists? Or that so many of us must behave as worker drones to survive? This cumulative work, which includes selections from many of Stanton's performances over the past three years, promises a searing look at some of the absurd contradictions of daily life. April 28-29, 7:30 p.m. at Dare-Dare, 460 Ste-Catherine W. # 505. :
