Show you right!
by MASTER C
Well, I'm off again. Down the 401 for a show that will not be coming to Montreal anytime soon. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I particularly like having to trek to T.O. every time there's something worth seeing, but what other choice do I have? Detroit's Slum Village are having a release party for their new album, and apart from being the only group I've bugged over in the last year, I hear they love Toronto. Sounds like a safe bet to me.
Speaking of good shows, Friday April 21 could be pretty hot right here in Montreal. Eminem, who has not died, been shot, overdosed on any drug or expired from AIDS, will be performing at CEPSUM with a slew of crazy talent. Alongside the nasal musings of Slim Shady are the hypnotical gases of the one and only Pharaohe Monch. This lyrical veteran was filing classics when Eminem was just learning how to swear, and now is a (mispronounced) household name. Simon Says is chapter four in the book of the man who said "MCs try to battle but they can't get with the/capital M-O-N-C-H on the mic I get spliffed up..." Also sharing the stage are the High and Mighty, made up of Mr. Eon and fat Milo Berger. These guys are dope but I ain't never heard about their live show. Let's hope they tear it up. Local support will be provided by Obscure Disorder and Shades of Culture who will represent lovely no doubt. Got your ticket?
A few Saturdays back, me and a couple of the boys threw on the Gucci socks and rolled into Polly Esther's for a night of dancefloor hip hop and R&B courtesy of Eddie Lewis and energetic sidekick DJ Soul. This place is the kind of spot I like to go to and do one thing: drink. We all got loose in the basement, profiling at the bar like we owned the place. Some girl told me there was a champagne room but I was in no condition to go looking for it, and dammit, we had fun. As far as the other two floors are concerned, I have no comment because I never spent any time on them. But check out the basement on a Saturday night. Eddie will take good care of you.
There's talk in the air of a possible tour consisting of Erykah Badu, D'angelo and the Roots heading out into the world this summer. Is this a show that Montreal is ready to pay for, let alone see? Only time will tell. Personally, I would welcome a steep ticket price if the show were an all-day sucker outside somewhere with local acts to boot. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a super tour headlined by supa emcees De La Soul, as well as a touchdown from Chicago's finest, Common. Coming soon to a summer near you.
In the mean time, let me know of some shows you'd like to see in Montreal this summer. I've got connections, y' know... :
