In and out at church
>>
From the Pope to Jerry Falwell, gays and lesbians have often found themselves on hostile ground when it comes to reconciling their spiritual beliefs and their sexuality. But in his new book, Out on Holy Ground: Meditations on Gay Men's Spirituality, author and Concordia Dean of Students Donald Boisvert argues that the gap between gay sexuality and spirituality isn't so far and wide.
"Some say sex and spirituality are miles apart--it's a commonly held attitude to separate the two. In fact, they're very close. A great deal about gay culture is in fact spiritual," he says. Boisvert argues further that gay men have created their own spirituality, one that is often in opposition to dominant organized religions. "Spirituality is based on ritual, beliefs and myths. Much of our sexuality as gay men is played out through these three things, often in an unconsciously spiritual way."
Boisvert will be on hand to discuss his book at a launch this Sunday, April 16, 5-7 p.m. at L'Androgyne, 3636 St-Laurent. :
