Looking good, Mr.Bukem

by KRISTA

LTJ Bukem has a slight case of megalomania. Fortunately we're not talking so much about the mental disorder characterized by delusions of grandeur, wealth and power (although there's probably a touch of that involved). Bukem's affliction manifests itself more as a passion for doing big things, taking it to the next level. Let's face it, in terms of drum & bass, the man's a visionary and he makes brilliant tunes.

Bukem's journey started in 1991 when he released his first record, "Demon's Theme" on his own Good Looking label. Now, almost a decade later, his Good Looking outfit has become the Good Looking Operation. Under its large umbrella the GLO now houses three sub-labels; Looking Good, DJ Blame's 720 imprint, and Bukem's own new-rare-groove project Cookin', as well as 30 artists, a tour company, a merchandising division, and 20 staff members. All that and the integrity of the Good Looking sound is still intact. GLO's planned releases for this summer include a new Logical Progressions comp, Earth volume 4, and 12-inches from some new U.S. artists.

Currently on tour to support his first ever solo album, The Journey Inwards, Bukem and crew (Blame, MC DRS and MC Conrad) will play at Cabaret on Tuesday, April 18, along with locals Double A & Twist.

This Friday, April 14, 514 and Michino (of the Free Bamboo Butterfly events) present Dragon of the Desert at Sona. The Dragons of the Desert "extinguish everything they see to transmute on a higher plane the magical intention of their lives." And by the way, the temple of the expanded mind is a world without edges, so watch your step. Moonshine's DJ Brian of So-Cal Moontribe desert party fame takes on Sona's main room along with Tiga, Nivoc and Yaz. Ram is in the bar. $20 at the door.

Inbeat Records's front man Christian Pronovost is going for the long haul this Friday, April 14. He plays his regular gig at China from 10 'til 3 a.m., and then heads down to Stereo to work the decks for the rest of the night. $17 at the door.

The latest dance craze sweeping the nation is called 2-step, or U.K. garage. If that's your bag, head on out to Shift at Jai bar this Sunday, April 16, where the special guest is Montreal's 2-step specialist, DJ Dr. Love.

The yearly Easter weekend extravaganza, namely the sixth annual Bal en Blanc, kicks off next Thursday, April 20, at Jingxi's Derencha with Fred Everything and one of the world's 10 best DJs, Detroit's Stacey Pullen. $10 at the door.

The Bal itself takes place on Easter Sunday, April 23, at le Palais de Congrès featuring Deep Dish, Peter Rauhofer, Danny Tenaglia, Kevin Yost and more. For info call 840-9164 or visit www.balenblanc.com.

Also next weekend, Friday, April 21, check out Detroit's Alton Miller at Jai bar with resident DJ Uzi, and the legendary Tony Humphries at Stereo for the Monthly Bombay Records night with DJs Nav and Patrick Dream, $20 at the door.
