Swing, butoh, butoh, butoh!

Butoh. So what the heck is it anyway? Let Japanese butoh artist Yumiko Yoshioka be your guide. Her solo show All Moonshine showcases this Japanese style of dance that was developed in the '50s. All Moonshine, which was performed at the 1997 San Francisco butoh festival, opens with Yoshioka's expressive back reflecting a moonlit glow. In the darkness of the choreography, unexpected, strange things start to appear and happen.

Yoshioka, a veteran of the dance form, was part of Ariadone, Japan's first women's butoh dance theatre, which started in the '70s. Two years ago, she shared her expertise during her last visit to Montreal when she gave butoh dance workshops. And now she's offering them again at Studio 303 from today, March 30, until April 1.
