So Jim Carrey was shut out of Oscar consideration again this year. It must have been quite a blow, considering he took a 50 per cent cut in pay (down from $20 million to 10) to make Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman biopic. And he did deliver for the film, pumping a good deal of energy into his impersonation.

But nothing beats the real thing--or so I was reminded when I viewed Andy Kaufman: I'm From Hollywood, a documentary made ten years ago that Rhino is rereleasing to cash in on Kaufman fever. This doc focuses on Kaufman's bizarre wrestling fixation and features interviews with people recalling Kaufman's exploits (including Robin Williams and Tony Danza). Kaufman was truly hilarious when looking directly into the camera, telling the residents of Nashville that they were all stupid hicks while he was more important because "I'm from Hollywood."

Footage includes Nashville residents' reactions to the taunts: generally, they rose to the bait, foaming at the mouth and looking much like the inbred losers Kaufman was accusing them of being. Ultimately, it all gets a bit repetitive (how many times can Kaufman challenge someone to a match?), but Kaufman fans and the curious uninitiated will love this glimpse of a manic genius.
