On with the shows!

by SCOTT C

About a week and a half ago, I had the pleasure of meeting this cat named Larry while working at my other job at the record store. This short, stocky, thick-necked brother was dressed head to toe in Johnny Blaze, sporting a new pair of golden Timberlands and smelled like a Versace cologne sales rep. Larry explained to me, in what sounded like a Nigerian/Brooklyn accent, that he had heard much about Montreal and the great music scene that existed here, not to mention the world of records to be found by the discerning collector. After showing me his want list of old hip hop records and other stuff he was looking for, he asked me why in the four weeks he had been here he hadn't been able to go and see one good show?

It's been more like four months since there was a stellar show downtown and I'm starting to get the willies. Y'know, it's when the weather starts getting warm and people start to come out of hiding and relax. That's technically when the fun should begin, right? Now, I hate to repeat myself, but a great way to start off your spring would involve checking out the Femi Kuti show at Le Spectrum this Sunday. This is perhaps the live music experience at its best, and when you see how many people they can fit on the stage at one time, you'll shit your pants. I'm no deserter, but when I found out last month that "abs of steel" soulster D'Angelo would not be coming to Montreal for a leg in his Voodoo tour, I got my ass to a phone and got tickets to the March 29 Toronto show. That show will also include the Mighty Mos Def who I'm told might be showing up here later on in spring for Swirl. Keep your fingers crossed.

All of you who were pissed with that lippy little Eminem when his show got cancelled last year might be interested in this bit of news. The one and only Slim Shady will be in town April 21 for a show at... CEPSUM... ?! That's right, kids, Eminem, coming soon to a university near you. And is it me, or have all the latest pictures of Eminem showed him looking anything but slim?

RBG and Ryzensun continue their comedy series with another installment of Afripalooza, happening at Kola Note on Saturday, April 1 at 8pm. I checked out the last one with a friend and walked out of there wondering why nobody knew about these things. This is some funny shit with comedy talent from Showtime at the Apollo, Def Comedy Jam and BET. Although the series is billing funny ethnic cats from "various international locales," most of them hail from New York. This time out you can check Ruperto Vanderpool representing the Dominican Republic, Jon Laster from the U.S. and Sinck, takin' jabs from the Barbadian point of view.
