Social credit lives!

>>

Tired of being a wage slave? Think the government should supplement your meagre earnings with cold, hard cash? Join the Creditistes!

According to the history books, the Social Credit movement--which believes that the cost of living will always outstrip wages and advocates the distribution of money to all--officially died in the 1980 federal election when the last five Creditiste MPs were turfed out of office.

But the spirit of Real Caouette and Bible Bill Aberhart lives on: many Montreal homes recently received a neo-Socred flyer called the Michael Journal, decrying the tyranny of Canada's banks. It seems a group of people in the community of Rougemont (of local apple juice fame) are trying to resurrect the Social Credit movement.

But be forewarned: the group calls for "the economic reform of Social Credit in accordance with the social doctrine of the Church." An accompanying flyer to the Michael Journal informs readers of Satan's nefarious skullduggery and warns of the "horrors of hell."

"We don't talk to journalists because they usually twist our words around," said Madame Guillemette, who answered the phone number provided on the flyer, in response to the Mirror's interview request. But maybe they'll talk to you: Bible-thumping Socred wannabes can call 856-5714 for more information. : --Philip Preville
