Record shop shuffle
by KRISTA
I think I'm going to petition the City of Montreal to rename St-Laurent as Record Store Row, as there are now going to be no less than six "DJ shops" located on (or just slightly off) the strip.
Rotation, formerly located in a closet in the back of Rayon Laser, have relocated to the old Cyberia Café space on the southeast corner of Clark and Prince-Arthur. Rotation's grand re-opening is today, Thursday, March 16, and from 5-10 p.m. DJs Fred Everything, Maues, Stephane Latreille, Scout, Dubline, Mr. O. & Alex T., Khaled and Rocket Rechad will be playing tunes in the new store. NYC's JoVonn, who is back to play at Therapy tonight at Jai Bar, will make an in-store appearance as well. The new Rotation will carry everything from mix tapes (courtesy of Jojoflores) to bags and T-shirts, as well as DJ gear and new and used vinyl.
Rayon Laser seems to have had no trouble at all finding someone to take it over its tiny back room. Philgood has moved his faction of the Tabou conglomerate there and is offering special redux benefits to new shoppers. This mysterious move has me wondering if the rumours about Tabou closing its Bleury street store are true. I've heard it said that the city bought the lot where Tabou (and a rather prominent after-hours club) are located and is planning to bulldoze the whole damn thing. Hmmm...
Christian Pronovost, owner of St-Laurent's first DJ store Inbeat Records, told me that he has big plans for his operation as well. He wasn't too forthcoming but assured me that blueprints for a bigger, better Inbeat are being drawn up as we speak. For the meantime, the old Inbeat will be hosting a pre-Stereo in-store with the masterful DJ/producer Kerri Chandler from 9-11 p.m. on Friday, March 17. In Pronovost's words, "It's a unique chance to meet with one of the legends." Chandler, who has produced for labels like Shelter, Ibabdan and King Street and is renowned the world over for his signature basslines and spiritually guided tunes, joins DJs Nav and Patrick Dream at Stereo this Friday for the Monthly Bombay Records party. $25 at the door.
The granddaddy of the all-in-one DJ store, DNA-Science-Moog Audio on Pine and St-Dominique, report that they're still going strong and quite happy with their space. No sense in fixing what ain't broke.
This Friday, March 17, British tech-funker the Advent descends on Sona's main room. The Advent (aka Cisco Ferreira, aka G Flame) got his start in the biz as a production assistant for techno legends like Derrick May, Fingers Inc. and the Adonis. Years later he runs his own label and produces for several others. DJ Paul Edge as well as Sona regulars Tiga and Yaz join the Advent. $20 at the door.
Lastly, this Saturday, March 18, Nice Productions are throwing a two-room event called Oasis (they hadn't heard of the first Oasis) featuring tech-psy-trance DJs Lori the Hi-Fi Princess from NYC, Unknown Soldier from T.O., Plush and Clone from Ottawa, and locals Jordan Dare, Spinal and Moodbug. $20 at the door, call 302-4424 for info.
