WAZZZUUUUUUP!!!
by SCOTT C
Some of you may have caught a glimpse of Jim Jarmusch's film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai this past summer when it played during that strange festival of everything down at the Just for Laughs Museum, but most of you didn't. Anyways, it opens this Friday, March 10, in Montreal and boasts big ol' Forest Whitaker and an original score by none other than the RZA himself. Apparently, this is a classic take on the gangster flick that gets the Jarmusch treatment. There's supposed to be kung-fu in it too, so I'll see you there.
Now, I don't expect all you herbs to drop your KinderEggs and run out to the box office right away, but when the rest of you get a chance, swing by the Spectrum and pick up a couple of Femi Kuti tickets. The crowned Prince of Afro-beat has worked it into his royal schedule to be in Montreal on March 26 for a live show that simply cannot be missed. Other musical delicacies will be provided by the never-miss-an-Afro-beat master, Victor Africa. Tickets and info: 790-1245.
A public debate on graffiti in Montreal ironically attracted a majority of graf writers to the DeSève Theatre last Thursday night. Although the forum was attended by the Ville de Montréal, the SPCUM and the STCUM, anyone else visibly outside of the culture was visibly absent. "The kids were really fed up with getting tickets, getting beat up and arrested for crimes that did not fit the punishment," said one organizer. Apparently a heated dispute prevented any sort of forward movement during the evening, and to top it all off, STCUM representatives called a few days later to say they would no longer be available for talks--in reaction to a heavily bombed Atwater metro only hours after the debate.
If you haven't seen it already, then follow these directions from the head nerd himself and treat yourself to a laugh. www.adcritic.com has a site where you can check out some hilariously retarded commercials (now you know what I do on the computer), and more importantly WAZZZZUP!!, a Budweiser commercial spin-off that stars all of your favourite superheroes. If this doesn't make you pee, then you should go back to playing with the aforementioned chocolate candy with the toy in the middle.
For you pocket organizer types: the kids from Bounce, Tuesdays at Tokyo, who are still growing with leaps and bounds, are now also taking care of Mondays at Blizzarts, a slight hop, skip and jump up the street. The new night is called SLOW, and as far as I know, anything goes. Guests over the next while include everyone from Buck Rogers and Kano to myself.
Wednesdays at Luba have taken a turn in the form of the Sekond Coming, with DJ Dobie Gillis and friends serving up hip hop, funk and soul. This week showcases paintings by local artist Sophie Gareau, whose works will be up until next Tuesday.
