Midnight special
We all know that New Year's 2000 was one of the most overhyped events of our lifetimes. But no one knows it better than four photographers who set out on a 24-hour mission at noon on Dec. 31 to shoot the millennial action--or lack of it.
"We were prepared for almost anything--riots, power outages--but absolutely zero unexpected incidents happened!" says project coordinator Gunther Gamper. "But even if there weren't any catastrophes, there was certainly a feeling of adrenaline in the air."
Appropriately, the title of the resulting black and white chronicle is Temoins, Chronique d'un non-evenement. The 69 shots of scenes in Montreal and Quebec City, by Gamper, David Kopytko, Patricia Gonzalez and Pascal Teste, capture the celebration, anxiety and indifference of the passing of Y2K. The show is presented with a soundscape of interviews and ambient clips from that infamous night. It starts Friday, March 10 and runs to April 23 at the Centre d'histoire de Montreal (335 Place d'Youville). :
