Judgement day

by KRISTA

Hold on to your whistles and glo-sticks, party people, because a veritable tsunami of uplifting prog-trance is about to swallow Montreal and there's not much you can do to prepare yourself for the imminent storm of the Eurosound. In the past year it has inundated the U.K., Ibiza and parts of Europe. Now the massive wave of "new trance" has set its sights on our friendly shores. Riding this swell of sound is the man responsible for the phenomenon, voted Best DJ by every music magazine in England, the reason Gatecrasher club kids get the club logo tattooed on their bodies: the unstoppable Judge Jules.

The Judge, who got on deck way back in 1986 just after the rare groove and jazz funk thing faded for the first time, has held residencies at pretty much every megaclub in London and the surrounding countryside since the early '90s. He is now resident DJ at England's infamous Gatecrasher and the Cross in London, hosts two radio shows on the U.K.'s national Radio One and runs his own label, Serious. On Saturday, March 10, you can experience the awesome power of Judge Jules when he crashes down on Sona's main room. Forget boarding up your windows, your only hope is to take shelter in Sona and wait for him to hit. Sona regulars Luc Raymond and Laflèche will be anchored alongside Jules, and Sona bar resident Joubin will be flanked by the duo of Andy Cato and Tom Findlay, aka Groove Armada, kings of the upscale Fatboy beats. $25 at the door, raincoats not included.

Tonight (Thursday, March 2), Afro Urban and Family Productions begin their new night at Sugar. Setting the mood will be local legend Chris Farley, followed by the highly underrated DJ Rob Brown, who's just back from another whirlwind Canadian tour. No one will be turned away at the door for any reason (unless you don't have the cash), so come one, come all. Tax is $4, $2 with the flyer.

In the name of the Underground, spare no expense. Check the very techno flyer for the ADSR event at World Beat Lounge this Friday, March 3--it's a business card-sized slab of metal. Cool, but not very pocket-friendly. Special guest DJs on the night are a pair of Toronto natives, Revolver/techno.ca recording artist Algorithm and Mike Shannon of Cynosure Records, plus locals Appleseed and Deadbeat. $10 at the door.

Thau is now hosting Atmosphere Fridays at Jingxi, with resident DJs Alain Vinet and Jester serving up a fusion of afro-latin rhythms, lush vocals and killer beats. Very good for the soul.

The future of rave is coming to Montreal. This Saturday, March 4, Nice Productions present Cloud 2. DJs on the night will be, among others, Sase One and Appleseed, with special guests Rob Brown and Neerav spinning a selection of tunes from the good old days. For info, call 720-6490.

Every Wednesday, Smilin' Jack and the Good Life Crew present Karma at Living, where the theme is "what goes around comes around," so remember to spread the love. Resident DJs are Nikola Torriero and Bruno Brown, with rhythmic accompaniment by Quicksound.
