The Vue from here
You'll look at the contents of your green box a little differently after checking out the wares at L'Art de la recuperation. In the hands of Senegalese artisans, refuse like old tires and soda cans have been transformed into sandals and suitcases. The variety of items on display is a testament to the inventiveness of the youth of Dakar, says Isabelle Guerin of the Afrique en mouvements gallery. "There are some remarkable pieces--they've made little shiny hats woven from old video tape, handbags from recuperated plastic and used wrought iron for candlesticks."
This is just one of the visual arts shows under the Vues d'Afrique banner--also featuring Kenyan jewellery, traditional instruments of Guinea and Madagascar and a medley of masks--taking place at venues across the city. Also keep your eyes open for two intriguing shows in March, after Black History Month is over: Laylah Ali looks at ethnic violence in the States in her comic-like creations at Galerie des Modernes and MdlC Frontenac hosts a vibrant show on the textiles of Mali. Meanwhile, L'Art de la Recuperation goes to March 17 at 910 Jean-Talon E. For info on other shows, call 284-3322. :
