Else Smith, the "sweet and ornery" proprietor of the popular Roy Ave. establishment that bears her name, died last weekend in a blaze at her home on Hotel-de-Ville.
Friends have organized a party in her memory, to be held at the Bayou (on Rachel at Clark) on Monday, February 7 at 5 p.m. "There won't be a funeral," says Else's bar manager and friend Alexis O'Hara. "All Else ever wanted was a big party, and the Bayou was a favourite hangout of hers. We're asking people to dress up--Else would have loved that. The only rule is: no speeches. Don't show up with the poem you wrote in tribute to Else, because you won't get to read it."
Despite the tragedy it's business as usual at Else's, which first opened six years ago. Instead of flowers, donations in Else's name can be made to Ste-Justine Hospital. :
