In the red again

by KRISTA

Remember those red leather chaps with the heart-shaped cut-outs on the ass that you bought at the Danier liquidation sale last fall? Well, their time has come--the festivities for the BBCM's 7th annual Red Party Weekend begin next Thursday, Feb. 10. To start off the weekend, join China's Angel Jacklyn Jet and DJ Sylvain Roy at les Jeudis Gais "Back to Business" at China Club where, during a pre-cocktail, the BBCM will hold a donation ceremony to the benefit of local HIV/AIDS organizations and Gay & Lesbian community groups. On Friday, Feb. 11, check out either the Soiree Plein Coeur at Sky Pub or the Dress Code Party at l'Aigle Noir. The main event takes place on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Spectrum with DJs Tom Stephan (aka Superchumbo), Jester and Nicola T, and vocalist Judy Albanese. The final installment takes place at Stereo on Sunday, Feb. 13, with Fever! starring the acclaimed Manny Lehman alongside Stereo resident DJ XL. Passes for the entire weekend can be purchased on the Net for $75 at www.bbcm.org or, if you don't have access to the Net, call (514) 875-7026, ext. 201.

This weekend marks the fourth anniversary of Montreal's most successful afterhours club (and don't anyone go getting their knickers in a knot--I'm not necessarily saying the best, just the most lucrative). Sona's birthday celebrations begin this Friday, Feb. 4, with a set by a bespectacled man whose reputation as a DJ and producer is rivalled only by Jeff Mills. London, Ont.'s Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman, works the decks, EFX and 909 alongside Sona residents. The party continues on Saturday, Feb. 5 as the legendary Tony Humphries makes his second appearance in Sona bar, alongside resident Joubin. After the bar closes, Plus 8 recording artist and world-renowned DJ John Aquaviva hits the main room while L.A.'s DJ Rectangle works the lounge over. I'm sure I hardly need to remind you that Sona birthday parties are the kind of events you don't want to miss. The tax is $20 at the door on Friday night and $30 at the door on Saturday.

As legend would have it, the phoenix has risen from the ashes. Montreal's premier drum & bass night the Session is back in action every Wednesday, at the very same space where it originally began, what is now Jingxi. Longtime residents Jordan Dare, Double A & Twist and MC Fuse will set the pace alongside local guests, and every six weeks the crew will host a Dune Recordings night featuring international talent. $5 at the door.

Jai Bar kicks off Black History Month this Friday, Feb. 4 with Body Music, where resident DJ Uzi's guest will be local vocalist Darnell Robinson. Proceeds from the evening go to the Sun Youth Organisation.

Next Tuesday, Feb. 8, DJ Futurelad has managed to convince Beck's tour support DJ Swamp to pay a visit to Bounce at Tokyo. Finally, from Feb. 11-16, and again on the 19th, Ascend artist Alain Thibault, Chants Libres and ACREQ are putting on a "techno opera" interpretation of Frank Wedekind's Lulu at Usine C. Doors at 8 p.m. :
