#1 with a bullet

by SCOTT C

Who says there's no underground hip hop scene here? It seems that Montreal's own Sans Pression have proved that they can hang without compromise yet again. The duo of SP and Ti-Kid released their album 514-50 dans mon reseau on Mont Real Records earlier this year, which at press time had sold a staggering 23,000 copies in Quebec. This fat figure makes them the #1 selling rap group in Quebec this year. The album reached #20 on the 1999 Top 40 sales chart of Le Palmares, following close behind chart regulars like Celine Dion, Jean Leloup and Kevin Parent. Congratulations, and keep that good shit comin'.

Shame on all who missed the Ivanna Santilli show at Cabaret last Thursday night. Her sexy mix of Brasil y Latin funk and soul mesmerized the half-full house with one of the tightest bands I have seen roll through here in forever. I have already vowed to make sure that everyone I know will be in attendance the next time she comes through.

Those of you who still think that black people can't get down with the heavy stuff should check out Washington hardcore legends Soul Brains (formerly known as Bad Brains) playing at Foufounes on February 11. The band is rolling with all the original members, including H.R. and Daryl Jennifer, who used to tear things up with the quickness back in the day. Check it out, you may just learn something.

Sona is gearing up for their 4th anniversary on the 4 and 5 of February. If you've ever attended this party in the last couple of years, then you know it's no-holds-barred. No word on the special guests as of yet but I'm sure it won't be long now. Don't worry, though, all your favourite residents like Jordan Dare and Ram, Ray Ray, Red Dredd and Eddy Lewis, Tiga and Yaz will be in the house as well.

This Friday, January 28, at Cabaret is a night called Jazz Workshop, presented by the Scientists of Sound DJ crew. These guys will be exploring everything rooted in jazz--hip hop, funk, trip hop and acid jazz. $6 at the door, $4 at Noize and hosted by Pat Wreck and Revolution. Finally, this Sunday, January 30, DJ Luv will be doing a big-hearted in-store set at Noize beginning at 2 p.m. This weekend also marks availability of emergency guitar strings and drumsticks at Noize for all you Plateau acts practicing late on a Saturday night.
