Coming soon to finer video boutiques near you is the 1961 sexploitation trailblazer The Twilight Girls. Set in an elite girls' school, the film has a group of mixed-up girls testing the limits of teen behaviour while finding their various ways in life. One young lass attempts to escape a family scandal at the school; others are simply dying to disrobe in front of their mates after dark.
Lesbian camp aficionados should take note, as there's plenty of gal-on-gal sexual innuendo here, with jealous cat fights thrown in for good measure. It's pretty fun viewing, with an additional layer of wonkiness enhancing the film due to the fact that all the dialogue is looped (dubbed over the soundtrack after production). Thus all the schoolgirls look like they're acting above ground, but sound like they're trapped at the bottom of a well. Produced by soft porn demigod Radley Metzger, the film was banned in New York when first released because of its daring lesbo overtones.
Such a Long Journey hits the stands this week. Director Sturla Gunnarsson's adaptation of Rohinton Mistry's novel is an exceptional film, full of rich emotional detail and featuring the top-notch performance of Indian actor Roshan Seth. To be placed at the top of your don't-miss list.
