Ice-capism
by KRISTA
It's all I can do to channel every ounce of my energy in an attempt to thwart the desire burning deep inside of me to crawl back to my fluffy duvet and my very comfy bed. I am in the throes of the January blahs, that seasonal depression that is brought on every year at this time by intense cold and lack of sunlight. And the reality is that there are still at least 63 days left until spring. So, since I refuse to let crotchety Old Man Winter keep me holed up in a cave like a Smurf trying to escape the sharp claws of the evil cat Azrael, I have decided that I will try my best to simply deny the existence of sub-zero temperatures. A little escapism goes a long way during the winter and thankfully there are a plethora of happenings to "escape" at over the next few weeks.
For instance, this Friday, Jan. 21, presents itself as a prime candidate for a little disco-escapism. For starters, Detroit based DJ/producer Scott Grooves brings his Mothership Reconnected funk-ness to Body Music at Jai Bar, where resident DJ Uzi will be celebrating a birthday. Party indeed. Your hosts for the evening are Natasha and friends, and the price is $10 at the door. But mind you don't get too loaded there because you really must check out the magic of DJs Iz and Diz at Stereo later that same night. $20 at the door.
Saturday, Jan. 22, Nice Productions are throwing a techno-trance and drum & bass event with DJs Menace and Hugh Sharp from New York, Ruffneck from T.O., Jordan Dare, Sase-One, Appleseed, Corey K and more. For info call 302-4424.
On Sunday, Jan. 23, the special guest at Tokyo's Big Treat Sundays will be local rock star in the making Jordan Dare. For a change, Mr. Dare will be playing a set of old school breakbeat bombs, not drum & bass, alongside resident DJ Keith Rocka. Free before 11 p.m., $4 after.
Also on Sunday, you should head to Shift at Jai Bar and pay your respects to Double A and Twist who, much to their chagrin, may be playing a bunch of somebody else's records. It would seem that last Thursday someone absconded from Jai bar with the duo's bag of tricks (hopefully by accident) and has yet to return them. I am personally making a plea to whoever may have unwittingly (or not) taken the records to please return them to their rightful owners. A DJ's records are sacred, and so you can surely understand how losing them sucks. Contact the Dune office at 286-3860 if you have any info.
Finally, Jojo Flores, Christian Pronovost and I invite you to join us Tuesdays at Wax Lounge for DJ Jam Sessions, hosted by Etienne and Nick, to be held weekly until the end of January and then once a month, showcasing local DJ talent and warm house vibes. :
