Noisemakers 2000: Everybody Sexareeno!

>> Sex magic and crabcakes spell success for the Sexareenos

By GENEVIEVE PAIEMENT

With instant cult classics like "Everybody Sexareeno!," the Sexareenos are not unlike a great, sexy ball of fire, hoping to scorch this city's rock 'n' roll scene like an overflowing lake of flames on judgment day. Their top 10 influences, according to Colonel Lingus (bass and vocals) are, in no particular order, "sex magic, crabcakes, the opposite sex (all shapes and sizes--gays welcome too), Inuit throat singers, Cheval Blanc beer, Leslie Roberts, any good rock 'n' roll (we can't disclose what that is), voodoo, Liza Minelli and Harmony Korine."

Alongside the Colonel are Choice on guitar and vocals, Bridge Mixture on drums and vocals and "Work With Me" Annie on Farfisa. Composed of ex-members of the Spaceshits, the Irritations, the Atomic Pranksters, Tempo 5 and a member of the Daylight Lovers, they've been together for less than a year and have played shows in Montreal, T.O. and New York with the likes of the Plungers and the Vacant Lot. A summer 2000 North-American Mega Tour with Toronto's Deadly Snakes and Greg Oblivion of Memphis is in the works. Also planned is a gig at the upcoming Las Vegas Grind weekend, where they'll be sharing the bill with such old hands as Barry and the Remains, the Flaming Groovies and the Standells.

Musicians from around the world are clamouring to work with the Sexareenos: Billy Childish (of Headcoats, Milkshakes and Mighty Caesars fame), Mick Collins (of Gories, Blacktop and Dirtbombs fame) and New Orleans legend Alex Chilton of the Boxtops have all offered to record them. And Long Gone John, art dealer, owner of Sympathy for the Record Industry and rock 'n' roll sugar daddy, has already offered to put up the dough needed to make the album. l
