Noisemakers 2000: Gay Plateau

>> Patricia Vetter and Jeffrey Feldman get back to business

By MATTHEW HAYS

One wouldn't necessarily think of the Plateau as a particularly straight hood--there are, after all, thousands of us gays and lesbians who live there--but considering the dearth of queer nightspots, one might wonder.

Local club hosts extraordinaires Jeffrey Feldman and Patricia Vetter have set about to change all that. Late last year they launched their Back to Business night, held every Thursday at China Club (which they co-manage).

"There was definitely a gap to fill," says Feldman of the venture. "And it seems like people are really responding positively. The crowds get bigger every Thursday." The Back to Business title has historical underpinnings, of course. Thursdays ruled at the former club Business, and after that faded in the early '90s, gay evening adventure choices overwhelmingly meant a schlep down to the Village.

"It is odd," notes Feldman, "considering the large gay population in the Plateau." Feldman points to the China Club's versatility as a venue as a big part of its success. A large dancefloor on one side is matched by a more conversation-friendly bar space on the opposite. "It's Golden-Girl friendly," says Feldman. You mean suitable for sluts, ditzes or bitches? "Precisely--and all under one roof!"

Hosting at the door every week is the unbeatable Jaclyn Jet, who has proven a wise choice by Feldman and Vetter. The former House of Pride drag diva welcomes guests warmly, equipped with devilish smile while dressed to the nines.

Feldman and Vetter aren't just working the China thing, either. Vetter, a veteran of Jello Bar and Wax Lounge, and Feldman, a longtime resto booster, joined forces to form Gas Productions, their "management consulting company."

"We were at turning points in our careers," says Feldman. "One day over breakfast we just decided to focus on enhancing the hospitality industry through various endeavours. We're into concept sculpting." l
