The hardest working band in hip hop
>> Well, Canadian hip hop, at least
by SCOTT C
The Rascalz, Canada's first hip hop group to go major are now benefiting from years of hard work with the release of their second full length, Global Warning. The Mirror caught up with tired and reluctant Rascal Misfit to talk about it while he was on laundry duty in T.O.
Mirror: You sound like you don't want to talk to me at all, man.
Misfit: I'm tryin' to squeeze in folding my laundry on my first day off in a while. We had some other interviews today and we have to go shoot a commercial in about 25 minutes. I'm trying to pack because we're leaving for Montreal in the morning. It's constant movin'.
M: I guess that can get taxing...
MF: It taxes a lot, man. It's not like I don't like dealing with the media, it's just that after you've answered questions all day, you switch to one word answers.
M: You feel like people ask you the same shit over and over again?
MF: "How long have you been together?" I mean, that's right in the bio!
M: You guys were the first group I ever interviewed.
MF: For real?
M: Yep. And I want to know--as someone who bugged out to "Blind Wid Da Science" and "Funky Migraine"--do you think your fans from back then are still fans now?
MF: Yeah, only now we have a few more. What we're seeing on tour is cool. We do this thing where we bring it right from the old stuff up to the new, watching how people get down. It's cool to see how many people know the lyrics from "Really Livin" and the older tracks.
M: I talked to Sixtoo from the Sebutones last week and he named "Blind Wid Da Science" as the best Canadian hip hop single of the '90s.
MF: Wow. Much love, but I have to disagree.
M: Why, what do you think?
MF: Almost any other song off of that album.
M: You pick one of your own songs as the Canadian hip hop single of the '90s!?
MF: Well, I don't know! Maybe "Northern Touch" was the best single of the '90s.
M: But you guys are rhyming on that track!
MF: If you're talking hype, airplay, requests, video rotation, the Junos and things like that, then I'm gonna have to say that song. I'm not gonna lie and say that it didn't do well for everybody involved.
The Razcalz perform at Sona on Saturday, December 4 at 1:30 am, $20. All regular Sona DJs play too.
