Friday is Steal Something Day
The Vancouver-based Media Foundation has designated Friday, November 26 as Buy Nothing Day, in which citizens across North America are encouraged to opt out of consumer society for 24 hours. Now, some local self-described "anarcho-
situationists" have decided to one-up the Media Foundation by declaring Friday as Steal Something Day. The group of miscreants wishes to incite Montrealers to pilfer wares indiscriminately from any law-abiding commerce they can find.
According to the group's e-mail circular, "We're talking about stealing, not theft. Stealing is just. Theft is exploitative. Stealing is when you take a yuppie's BMW for a joyride and crash into a parked Mercedes just for the hell of it... Theft is making profits at the expense of the disadvantaged and the natural environment."
Of course, the Mirror does not support Steal Something Day. Rather, we wish to warn all upstanding members of this fair city's merchant class, and alert them to the perils of Steal Something Day in particular and of anarcho-situationism writ large, a subversive philosophy of great virulence and treachery.
