Girlfriends beware!
>> The Daylight Lovers get it on
by ADAM GOLLNER
Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to one of Montreal's worst kept secrets. What with their recent sponsorship deal with Levi's and the imminent release of their debut album (recorded in Detroit with Crypt Records' Screamin' Joe Dirty), people are starting to notice the Daylight Lovers' sloppy teenage garage rock 'n' roll anthems. Rather than attempt to describe their ass-shaking and guffaw-inducing live shows, we let the dimestore Casanova trio tackle the big questions themselves:
On The Beginning:
"Lyle (Sheraton, vocalist) used to be an unsuccessful singer/entertainer who was working the hotel circuit thanks to his father's connections. One night, in Montreal, he met a former guard from a Laval prison nicknamed The Warden (bass) who was making ends meet by doing security at a hotel. They bonded over their love of Jerry Lee Lewis and soon joined forces with "Tic Tac" Rogers, a small-time hustler who became the drummer."
On daylight loving:
"We are what we are: Daylight Lovers. Call it what you want... daylight lovers, backdoor men or dirty cheats, we're the guys that take care of your girlfriends when you're not at home or are out at work or something. We feel that our love is best appreciated during the daylight hours. You know, we treat all women like snowflakes--no two are alike."
On recording in Detroit:
"We were in the studio owner's basement, drinking heavily. Around four in the morning, his wife, who was pregnant, came out and turned off the music. She asked her husband to tell everybody to go home. He just looked at her and said, 'They are home. They're all staying here.' She started shaking and was so furious she couldn't even talk and went upstairs. He goes, 'That's my wife. She comes down here all fat and pregnant, yellin' at me.' So he turned the music back up. There was a very awkward silence and then people started talking again."
On good causes:
"We feel that Saputo's got an unfair stranglehold on the cheese industry, and to support the cheese industry, we will be giving our 50 singles pressed on thin-sliced Provolone."
The Daylight Lovers play with the Vipers at Bar St-Laurent on Thursday, Nov. 25, 10pm, $4
