Browning around

by KRISTA

Rob Brown. You may know him, you may not, but you know the name. He is the ultimate trainspotter, man on a mission, forever on the hunt to uncover the secrets locked up inside Derrick Carter's record box. I have in my possession a copy of his latest tape. Of course, since CSIS decided that copyright infringement was an issue of national security you can't buy it anywhere, but maybe if you ask him nice he'll give you one. I promise you it'll become a fixture in your tape deck, 'cause it kicks ass.

Believe it or not, Hardcore Crew (read: bad boy crew) have been around for six years already and this Saturday, Nov. 27 they will celebrate in typical over-the-top fashion at Sona (last time I printed the wrong date--my bad). Terry Lee Brown Jr., DJ Disciple and Cut Killer join regulars Luc Raymond, Lafleche, Joubin, Eddy Lewis, Red Dredd and Ray Ray. $25 at the door.

This Friday, Nov. 26 Sona welcomes veteran DJ/Producer Robert Armani. With Tiga, Yaz, Ram, Jordan Dare and Devious, $20 at the door.

Looking for a really good time? Put down the phone and head out to check out Aural Pleasures this Friday, Nov. 26, brought to you by Elephant Cock Suckers (the name says it all). Your aural guides for the evening will be, among others, Corey K, Evil Chi, Sase-One, Jordan Dare and MC Fuse. Tickets for the event are available at DNA Records only, $6 each or two for $10. Drum my bass...

Afterhours reincarnate Blade has, in my book, graduated to viable club status. They seem to be booked until after the millennium, so that must mean things aren't going so bad. This Friday, Nov. 26 at Blade, the Outsiders present a night for techno purists featuring the Twin City's Woody McBride (ESP, Communique Records), NYC's Steve Watt and France's Geugrey. Locals include Mateo, Edan, G. O'Brien, Synesthesia and more. And check out the very artsy purist flyer--cool. $20 at the door.

Also at Blade, this Saturday, Nov. 27 Montreal's own Mad Max celebrates the launch of his first album entitled simply Live At..., which is one of the best techno-house albums of the year, in my opinion. $20 at the door.

Self-proclaimed house music guru and InBeat records head honcho Chris Pronovost starts a new residency at China Club this Friday playing, he says, "cutting-edge shit and some of my favourite club classics. It's a look at the past, present and future of music, and featuring some new new shit. This city needs to take chances." Whether that's a dare to show up I dunno, but rest assured you'll hear something a little different.

Finally, for those looking for something a little less invasive, musically speaking, DJs Luv and Nice Fred have found a new home at Blizzarts on Tuesdays, with a night they call Switch. It's free, it's not loud and bangin', and you can get a really big bottle of beer there. :
