UUUUUUUUUUGGHHHH!!!!!

by SCOTT C

This week marks the release of Master P's latest assault on the wonderful world of hip hop. P, the gazillionaire CEO behind New Orleans' No Limit Records, has never been a favourite of mine (that is of course not including the brilliant "Pushin' Inside of You" from the I'm 'Bout It soundtrack) but you and I both know that my opinion is highly overrated. Despite all the harsh critics and the "crusaders" for "real" hip hop, Master P and the No Limit clique have definitely carved a spot for themselves that isn't going anywhere... but wait.

Was I asleep when Master P aka Percy Miller signed a contract and was asked to come to training camp for The Toronto Raptors?! Of course I knew he was playing NBA ball on top of running No Limit Records, No Limit Clothing, No Limit Films, No Limit Toys, PM Properties and Advantage Travel, but playing for the Toronto Raptors!!!? A guy I know in Toronto who started going to games simply to yell UUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHH!!! at P from the stands told me that at the last two games he was at, P skipped the pre-game warm-up to shake hands and sign autographs. If only he would skip the pre-game and help Maestro Fresh Wes put out some interesting music.

Looks like this is a good month for heads in Mtl. With the arrival of Vancouver's Swollen Members and Halifax's Sebutones on the 25th, it's only the beginning of a good solid block of shows that'll last a few weeks. Swollen Members have been getting all kinds of kudos for their own brand of west coast shit--a group I would have liked to seen with Dilated Peoples when they were in Montreal. The Sebutones represent that whole Nova Scotia crew that puts out mad mixed tapes and singles all year round, and are probably pretty funny lookin' guys who can actually rhyme, so check it out at Le Studio.

Noize Musique (3697 St-Laurent) will be having an in-store performance featuring all the Mtl talent that is also on that bill on Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m. Look for MCs Divizion Blindee, V'da, Chilan, Josh Martinez, Justice and DJs P Love, Killa Jewel, Mana and Wreck.

Finally! Montreal Massive returns. On Thursday, December 2, Zoobone Records presents the continuation of one of the best and only "regular" nights of unadulterated live hip hop performance left in the city. Riding close on the heels of Garners new release "Propagundei"(where's my record Ozzie?) that was dropped on November 5, the ZOO follows up with one serious show. On stage that night are Gundei, Mizery, ...At Random, 01-Etranji, Comatoze, R.D.P.Izeurs, Bad News Brown, Nadege aka Black Cherry and from Toronto Diamond X, Al Sham and K.P. Showtime is 10 p.m. at Le Studio, again? Is Le Studio the new home of live hip hop in this city or what? Treat 'em right and they'll always be good to you. :
