A boy and his dog

by KRISTA

What do superstar drum & bass DJ/producer/

label owners do for fun? Nothing! According to V Recordings magnate J.J. Frost, running two labels and DJing keeps him and partner Bryan Gee too busy to do anything else. "No time," was his response to the majority of my questions. "No time, no time. I don't even have time for a girlfriend," Frost tells me over the phone from his Brixton office. "I only have time for my dog [a Sharpei] and to go to football matches [he's a Man U fan]."

And here I was thinking that being a superstar DJ and owning possibly the best drum & bass label meant you could at least have a nice car and eat well. "Well, yeah I have an S 230 Mercedes, but I don't drive it," he explains. "I have a driver to take me around. And I do like to eat well. But nothing too far-fetched. Like, I won't eat sushi or anything like that. Especially since I've been to Japan."

As for studio time and future bits from Leviticus (Frost's pseudonym). Lucky for us he doesn't mind the touring and he's a fucking great DJ. Even luckier, he likes Montreal. J.J.Frost returns to our town on Wednesday, Nov. 17 for Double A & Twist's new monthly, Dune, to be held at Nitebox. $10 at the door.
