Arts in the 'hood
by MARITES CARINO
It was almost exactly a year ago that artists Marie Roberge and Mitchell Kotansky wrote a letter to the city of Montreal asking for an arts space for the community of NDG. And, whaddayaknow, only 12 months later Arts NDG was born. Kotansky calls the new space "a grass roots centre," where both artists and residents can explore the world of art and creation.
For some time, these two artists have wanted to do a show together, and now they'll be able to do it in a space they've created. The show, entitled Deux regards, one movement, features Roberge's emotional, colourful canvases, as well as Kotansky's bronze sculptures, which explore the theme of interaction between men and women.
And to add another dimension to these works tonight (Thursday, Nov. 11) will feature a dance piece by choreographer/dancer Sarah Renelique, who is joined by dancer Aurelie Brunelle. Renelique used Roberge and Kotansky for inspiration and created this piece to celebrate the opening of the centre. The two dancers will move amid the artwork and will be accompanied by the live percussion of Danny Dauphin.
"You don't have to live in NDG to participate in the centre," Kotansky says--everyone is invited to partake. Deux regards, one movement, Thursday, Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. at Arts NDG (5800 Sherbrooke W.), free. For info, call 486-2787.
