In And Baby Makes Two, indie New York filmmakers Judy Katz and Oren Rudavsky take a close look at eight Manhattan women who are desperate to have children, though none have boyfriends or husbands. The filmmakers took two years to take a close look at the ensemble's lives, and the investigation pays off. And Baby Makes Two is a poignant look at the trials facing women who choose the rather daunting path of taking on parenthood alone. What with all the pressure women face to become moms, the film also shows the effects of negative attitudes towards women who choose to pop kids, sans papa. Extremely thoughtful and entertaining viewing. A&E, that bastion of factoid-filled, fluffy docs, is currently presenting its series of hour-long films about buildings. I caught Empire State Building, and found it to be loads of fun. Did you know the Mohawk Indians played a key role in building the structure? Apparently, they have some uncanny ability to overcome fears of heights, and thus had no trouble during the higher end of construction. Not so lucky for 14 other men, who dropped to their deaths during its construction. Facts you can't live without! --Matthew Hays |
