Get it on Paper by KRISTA Two guys who started out as bartenders at Manchester's Hacienda club now own and run one of the U.K.'s most respected record labels. Paper Recordings' Miles Holloway and Elliot Eastwick began their illustrious careers dividing their time between slinging pints whilst listening to the likes of Graeme Park and playing at the odd club night around Man. Then one day the two were offered a Saturday night at the now-infamous Hard Times club. Suddenly the duo were playing with the likes of Morales, Tenaglia et al. Finding themselves becoming increasingly bored with banal club politics and music, they pooled together what little cash they had, found someone to finance the rest and decided to start their own label. "Dave Tune from Azuli Records actually put out the first few releases for us," Holloway tells me from his office. "He told us he'd cut all the records for us and just send us the cheque minus his fee, so we went for it." And so Paper Recordings was born. Miles Holloway will pass through Montreal this week on his hot Canadian tour. You can check him out at Stereo on Friday, Oct. 1; $17 at the door. Or, if you prefer a more intimate environment, he plays Jingxi on Saturday, Oct. 2. Joining him on both nights is Vancouver DJ Craig Ness.
Now let's talk about doing something to improve your cycle of good karma. This Saturday, Oct. 2, you can do your part for world peace and attend the Global Dance Party for Planetary Peace, aka Earthdance. The event, which takes place simultaneously in 90 cities around the world, is a non-profit benefit in aid of the Tibetans who have been exiled from their homeland since the Chinese invaded in 1950. The goal of the event is to "create a global dancefloor to come to the aid of Tibet," and each DJ will play a track created specially for the occasion. DJs on the night here in Montreal are Takka, Hugh Sharp, Stormbass, Jeff MK Ultra, Rigpa and Seb. For more info check out www.earthdance.org or call 204-9849. Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
This Friday, Oct. 1, local unsung hero Peter Crno brings his version of deep teched-out beats to Sona's main room. Tiga's away, but regulars Ram, Yaz, Jordan Dare, Kwite Sane and Fabulous will all be in attendance. $20 at the door. Next Friday, Oct. 8, at Sona, the extra-special guests will be infamous D.C.-area DJ Scott Henry, and, what do you know, me...
On the interesting and multimedia-oriented tip, next Saturday, October 10, the Festival Internationale de la Nouvelle Danse presents an event called O-Zone. The evening will feature the cumulative talents of DJs, VJs and dancers like the Tactical Crew and various other "urban" dance troupes, presenting improvised performances to techno, down-beat, drum & bass, etc. with accompanying visuals. Esteemed guest DJ of the night is Britain's master of the tripped-out downtempo styles, Mr. Howie B. Other talent includes DJs Maus, Mighty Kat and Ram, VJs from Hypnotica and Synergie, and the aforementioned "urban" dance troupes from around the world. For info call 990-3031.
